Basic strategy (blackjack): definition and example

Chart that shows, for each hand and each dealer card, the decision that loses the least on average at blackjack.

Definition

Basic strategy is calculated, not guessed: for each situation, it compares the expected value of each action (hit, stand, double, split). Followed to the letter, it brings the casino’s edge down to the minimum the table rules allow, without removing it.

Example

With 16 against a dealer 10, hitting loses slightly less on average than standing: that is the basic strategy decision.

What to check

The chart depends on the table rules: check whether the dealer hits soft 17 and whether doubling after splitting is allowed.
