An unreliable casino can rarely be identified by a single detail. It is the accumulation of signals that should put you on alert: a licence that cannot be verified, terms written to give the operator complete latitude, a support team that replies without ever really answering. This guide presents the most common signals, then what to do if you are already in a dispute. It does not target any particular operator.
A licence that cannot be verified
A regulator’s logo at the bottom of the page means nothing on its own. What matters is finding the casino in the official register of the authority cited, with the same company name and the same licence number. Be wary when:
- no licence number or company name is given;
- the logo links to nothing, or to a page hosted by the casino itself;
- the company named in the terms and conditions is not the one in the register;
- the licence has been suspended or no longer appears.
The guide to licences explains how to carry out this check.
Vague or changing terms
Serious terms and conditions are dated, precise and consistent with the promotional pages. Several flaws should catch your attention:
- clauses that leave decisions on withdrawals, winnings or account closure “at the sole discretion” of the casino, with no criteria;
- a very broad definition of “bonus abuse” or “irregular play”, which can be applied to almost any session;
- terms changed without a date or history, or applied retroactively to bonuses already accepted;
- contradictions between the offer page and the terms and conditions;
- no complete version of the terms in a language you understand.
This is why it is useful to keep a dated copy of the terms at the time you deposit.
Endless withdrawals and confiscation clauses
The most serious signal concerns withdrawals. A withdrawal can legitimately be suspended while a check is carried out. It becomes worrying when:
- the request remains pending for weeks with no written explanation;
- the documents requested change every time you send them, or new supporting documents are required for no reason;
- support encourages you to cancel the withdrawal to “speed up” the process;
- the casino invokes a winnings confiscation clause for an unspecified breach.
The winnings cap also deserves your attention. It is common for a bonus. It becomes unfair when it applies to winnings made with your own money, without a bonus, or when it is set so low that any significant win becomes impossible to withdraw.
Fake reviews, clone sites and unrealistic promises
Reviews
A series of very positive reviews published in a short space of time, written in similar terms or focused on how quickly people won, should make you suspicious. Detailed complaints, with dates and amounts, are often more informative than overall ratings.
Clone sites and phishing
Fraudsters copy the look of existing casinos to obtain login details, deposits or identity documents. Check the exact address of the site before logging in, be wary of links received by email or messaging app, and never send documents or cryptocurrency to anyone who contacts you outside the site.
Promises
No casino can guarantee a win. Claims of “guaranteed winnings”, a “foolproof method” or bonuses with no conditions at all are warning signs in themselves, as is pressure to deposit immediately.
What to do if there is a problem
If a dispute arises, the quality of your case file matters as much as its substance. Proceed methodically:
- Stop depositing into the account concerned.
- Take screenshots of your balance, transaction history, withdrawal request and the terms in force, with the date visible.
- Contact support in writing, by email or through the form on the site, rather than by live chat alone. Set out the facts, amounts and dates, and ask for a reasoned reply that refers to a specific clause.
- Keep all correspondence, including any chat transcripts you can download.
- Use the internal complaints procedure of the casino if there is one, respecting its deadlines.
- Refer the matter to the licensing authority if the reply is not satisfactory. Depending on the regulator, complaints go through a dedicated form or a designated dispute resolution body.
If you paid by card, you can also ask your bank about the remedies available.
Before you deposit
The casinos we advise against and the reasons for that classification are explained on the casinos to avoid page. For each casino we track, the licence, withdrawal terms and KYC policy are presented with their proof in the catalogue, according to the methodology.
