Hit frequency: definition and example

Proportion of spins that pay something, even less than the stake: a 25% frequency means one winning spin in four.

Definition

Hit frequency counts winning spins, whatever the amount. A high frequency does not mean the game is in your favour: many “wins” are smaller than the stake.

Example

At Jacks or Better video poker, about one hand in five is dealt already paying (a pair of jacks or better); after the draw, more than four hands in ten pay out.

What to check

Read the hit frequency together with the RTP and the volatility: only the three together describe a game.

  • Volatility

    How a slot machine spreads its winnings: small and frequent wins (low volatility) or rare and large ones (high volatility).

  • RTP (return to player)

    Average share of stakes paid back to players over a very large number of games: a 96% RTP keeps 4% of stakes on average.

  • Paytable

    List of what each combination in a game pays; with the same rules, it is what sets the RTP of a slot or a video poker game.
